Perseus on the Psychiatrist’s Couch In

چکیده

Leterrier’s recent blockbuster, Clash of the Titans (2010), tells the story of the most famous adventures of Perseus, son of Zeus and the mortal Danaë, as he defeats the Gorgon Medusa before rescuing Andromeda, daughter of king Cepheus, from the gigantic sea monster. The basic details of these mythical adventures can be found in ancient sources. Furthermore, the film pays an immediate tribute to Desmond Davis/ Ray Harryhausen’s 1981 film of the same name. On balance, the 2010 film shares a lot more in common with its filmic predecessor than it does with the ancient sources. There are some quite direct pointers to the old film in the new, such as the mechanical owl Bubo, fight scenes with scorpions, and Zeus’ use of terracotta statuettes to symbolise divine control over humans on earth. We should, however, avoid pitting both films against an ‘ancient tradition’ as if it were a monolith: as always, both film-maker and ancient author engage in a creative and dynamic exercise of mythological choice when composing their stories. This is a point well acknowledged by one of our film-makers, Ray Harryhausen, who tells us that his choices are directed by both the cinematic medium in which he is operating and the intended family-oriented audience (Harryhausen and Dalton 2008: 99; 2009: 261). By way of introduction, I offer a short discussion of the major choices made for each film and the possible sources, both ancient and contemporary, that may have influenced them. 2

Are the Perseus-pisces Chain and the Pavo-indus Wall Connected?

In this paper we present a new redshift survey undertaken to address the rather interesting question that arises when all the currently available redshift information from the LEDA database is plotted in`hypergalactic' coordinates. A signiicant empty region was found between the southern Pavo-Indus (PI) wall and the northern Perseus-Pisces (PP) chain. This survey tests the reality of this void ...

Quantification and modelling of the dosimetric impact of the treatment couch in volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT)

Background: As the volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) becoming a main role of treatment ways, the effect of couch top becomes more significant. It is imperative to re-evaluate the couches that previously may have been considered of no importance during early treatment techniques. The impact of couch top on radiation delivery was explored and the couch model was tested with the aim of reduc...

Treatment couch positioning uncertainties using an EPID-based method

Introduction: The accuracy of patient positioning plays an important role for radiotherapy tasks. Short and automated Quality Assurance (QA) programs are becoming one of the challenging tasks in Radiotherapy. The current study, investigates the accuracy of treatment couch positioning with four degrees of freedom (4DoF) using a fast and accurate method based on an image acquired...

An Update of Couch Effect on the Attenuation of Megavoltage Radiotherapy Beam and the Variation of Absorbed Dose in the Build-up Region

Purpose: Fiber carbon is the most common material used in treating couch as it causes less beam attenuation than other materials. Beam attenuation replaces build-up region, reduces skin-sparing effect and causes target volume under dosage. In this study, we aimed to evaluate beam attenuation and variation of build-up region in 550 TxT radiotherapy couch.Materials and Methods: In this study, we ...

From the Psychiatrist’s Couch to Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells: Bipolar Disease in a Dish

Bipolar disease (BD) is one of the major public health burdens worldwide and more people are affected every year. Comprehensive genetic studies have associated thousands of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with BD risk; yet, very little is known about their functional roles. Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are powerful tools for investigating the relationship between genotype and p...
